VRG staff, Roger Lister and Björn Olsson took their Forensic science classes to the Vetenskapens Hus last week – to try out DNA analysis, for real.The purpose of the visit was for the students to practically investigate how DNA is used in forensic science. The students got a crime scenario and they had to solve the crime using DNA techniques used in real forensic labs.
Why not do these labs on campus? The school has no access to a PCR machine, which runs into the milllions and is needed to do DNA analysis.
Students seemed very positive and were very engaged throughout, even though the lab was 3 hours long. L
ots of the theory in the lab links nicely with Bio 1 and Kemi 2.
