Debate starts at VRG

The 2013 Swedish National Debate Championship was held in Göteborg at the end of October.  For the first time, VRGD took a team . . .

VRGD signed up a team and was accompanied by coach Micheline Grönlund. The members of the team were Sam Tabari, Emil Eriksson, and Sara Tabari.. It was an exciting trip!

On Friday evening, there was a workshop highlighting the rules of the WSDC (World School Debating Championship). On Saturday morning, our students participated in their first debate. it was against one of the teams from Kungsholmen Gymnasium. The debate was an impromptu and the topic read as follows: The House makes voting in national elections mandatory. This debate was won by VRGD.

The next round was a prepared debate on the topic: The House believes that global trading is a hindrance to the economic prosperity of developing countries. VRGD faced one of the teams from Hvitfeldska, our host school. VRGD won again.

The third round was an impromptu and VRGD faced another team from Hvitfeldska and this time – we lost. This team from Hvitfeldska were the champions of this season. The best debater in the Championship wrote an email to the VRGD team and said the following:

‘I just wanted to congratulate VRGD for your team’s efforts at the tournament, we had the chance to face them in the third round of the preliminaries and I was very impressed by their level of debating, considering the short time they had to prepare.’

Our debate team did not qualify for the finals but they ensured themselves a rank amongst the highest in the tournament. Congratulations to VRGD’s debate team – we are excited to welcome debate to VRG!
