Performing in a concert can teach students so much more than just music . . .

Students in the VRG Choir performed in the Stockholm wide concert – Star for Life on March 25.

What is Star for Life?starforlife1

Star for Life is an educational/ motivational programme, the aim of which is to strengthen the self esteem of young people in order that they might be better equipped to realize their dreams. We have developed a unique method in order to achieve this and external evaluations show very positive results.
We estimate that, by 2014, the program will be operating in 71 schools in South Africa, 20 in Namibia, 5 in Sweden and 1 in Sri Lanka. We will be reaching 100 000 pupils in three continents and, during the nine years that we have been operating, we will have reached approximately 200 000 pupils.
star for lifeThe work of Star for Life is in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Millennium Development Goals, to create fairer and more sustainable societies.
In its strategic plan Star for Life has chosen to define its activities in the following way:
“Star for Life offers a set of motivational programmes and services that inspire young people to value learning, acquire the knowledge and skills they need for productive work, and lead healthy lives free from AIDS.”

This week, students from VRG participated in a huge charity concert to raise money for this important cause.  Students from many different schools and organizations joined forces with professional musicians for a spectacular show.

During this experience, students learned so much more than just their songs  …

They learned what it takes to prepare for and implement an event with more than 200 participants. They met friends from different parts of Stockholm.  They learned about the challenges and triumphs of young people in South Africa and Namibia.  They practiced endurance participating between 13.00 – 22.00.  They experienced what can happen when many like-minded people work together.

We are so proud of these students’ efforts.  Well done!
